Question

Why does the unit not react when buttons are pressed?

Answer

The problem may have been caused by electrostatic discharge. Disconnect the set from the power supply, remove the backup batteries from the battery compartment for 5 minutes. Then re-insert the batteries and re-connect the power supply.
