You may be trying to assemble the trimmer in the wrong position. The teeth of the click-on trimmer have to point toward the back of the shaver.

Insert the lug of the trimmer into the slot in the top of the shaver (1). Then press the trimmer downward (2) to attach it to the shaver
(‘click’).
