How can I rip or record MP3/WMA files from CDs with the Windows Media Player?

Answer

With Windows Media Player 9.0

  1. Insert your CD into the CD-ROM drive.  
  2. Click Copy from CD.  
  3. All tracks are selected to be copied if you have not previously copied them from the CD.  
  4. If there are any tracks that you do not want to copy (rip), clear the check box next to them.  
  5. You can select the check box at the top of the list to clear or select the check boxes next to all tracks.  
  6. Click Copy.  
  7. The first time you click Copy, a message appears asking if you want to copy protect your music. Click one of the following options:
    1. Copy protect your music
    2. Do not copy protect your music
    3. Read the copyright acknowledgement
  8. Select the copyright acknowledgement check box, and then click Next.  
  9. Click one of the following options, and then click Finish:
    1. To select a different format and audio quality, click Change my current format settings.
    2. To copy tracks using the current format and audio quality, click Keep my current format settings.  
  10. If you clicked the Change my current format settings option in the previous step, the Copy Music tab is displayed. Select a different format and specify an audio quality using the slider, and then click OK.  
  11. Optionally, you can select the Eject CD when copying is completed check box to stop playback and eject the CD when copying is completed.

With Windows Media Player 10

  1. Insert your CD into the CD drive.  
  2. On the File menu, point to CDs and Devices, point to Rip Audio CD, and then click the CD drive that contains the audio CD that you want to rip. The Rip feature is displayed and all tracks are selected to be ripped if you have not previously ripped them from the CD. 
  3. If there are any tracks that you do not want to rip, clear the check box next to them. 
  4. You can select the check box at the top of the list to clear or select the check boxes next to all tracks. Click the Rip Music button .
