Question

How do I upgrade the software of my Music Center and Music Station?

Answer

For your convenience, Philips has made upgradeable software version 1.2.10 available.

Step 1: Check your current firmware version

  1. Turn on your WAC5 Center
  2. Press MENU
  3. Press to select "Information". Press OK

    • The display shows the FW (firmware) version number
    • Upgrading is necessary if the FW version is an earlier one

Note: The firmware information is also useful when you call the Philips Customer Care Center.

Step 2: Download the Firmware upgrade

  1. Check that you have the following tools:

    • PC (Pentium III 300MHz processor or higher)
    • CD-R/RW writer and writing application software
    • Blank CD-R or CD-RW disk
    • Internet access (broadband or high speed)
  2. Click the attached file to download the Firmware Upgrade to your PC
  3. Unzip the .zip file

    • Do not rename the filename.
    • Visit http://www.winzip.com for downloads if you can not open the .zip file.

Step 3: Burning Upgrade on CD-R / CD-RW

  1. Extract the files by unzipping the zipped file.
  2. Write the extracted files—not the zip file—onto a blank CD-R or CD-RW disk, using the following settings:

    • File System CD-ROM Joliet
    • File name length: max 31 chars (ISO Level 2)
    • Mode: 2/XA
    • Character set: ASCII
    • Single session
    • Write Speed : Low
  3. Finalize the disk. (The application may do this automatically.)

Tip: For more information on burning software please refer to two popular burning software programs

Using Nero Burning Rom

Please make sure you are using Nero Burning Rom and not Nero Express. If necessary, you can start Nero Burning Rom directly from the Nero folder in your Windows Start Menu.

  1. Insert a blank CD-R or CD-RW disk
  2. Open the Nero Burning Rom
  3. Select 'Burn Image' from the 'Recorder' menu
  4. Select the unzipped file that you saved
  5. Click 'Burn'. The Firmware upgrade will now be burned onto the disk

Using CD Creator

  1. Insert a blank CD-R or CD-RW disk
  2. Open CD Creator
  3. Select 'Create Data CD'
  4. Select 'Record CD from CD image' in the 'File' menu
  5. Select the unzipped file that you saved
  6. Click 'Start Recording'. The Firmware upgrade will now be burned onto the disk

Step 4: Check Wi-Fi connection

  • Wi-Fi connection between Center and Station:
    • Check you have pressed STANDBY-ON to turn on the WAC5 Center and WAS5 Station
    • On the Station, check you can playback tracks in HD mode
    • On the Station, check the signal indication shows maximum reception
  • Wi-Fi connection with the Wireless router/Access Point (if applicable):
    • Check that the Wireless router/Access Point is working when your Center is connected to PC via a Wireless router/Access Point

Step 5: Apply the Upgrade to your Music Center & Music Station

Upgrade WAC5 Center

  1. Check that the WAC5 Center is on and that the WAS5 Station is off
  2. On the Center, insert the upgrading CD into the CD slot loader, with the CD graphic printed side facing you

    • Upgrading starts automatically
    • The display shows "Updating firmware, please wait……". A progress bar appears
    • The Center will reboot itself twice during the upgrading process
    • After about 5 minutes, the Center returns to HD mode. The upgrading is completed
(Note: Keep your Center turned on during the upgrading.)

Upgrade the WAS5 Station

  1. Press STANDBY-ON to turn on the WAS5 Station

    • Upgrading starts automatically
    • The display shows "Updating firmware, please wait……". A progress bar appears
    • The Station will reboot itself twice during the upgrading process

(Note: Keep your Station turned on during the upgrading.)

Your product has been successfully upgraded!

Step 6: Verifying the firmware version

To check the firmware version, see Step 1.

Helpful hints: If you have any problems, see Troubleshooting.

Troubleshooting

If the Station's display shows: "Firmware is damaged, restoring a new copy …" or "Center is connected, retrieving firmware"

Follow the DON'T below:

  • DON'T restore the Center's setting (Don't select "Menu" → "Setting" → "Restore Setting" on Center)
  • DON'T delete Stations from the Center (Don't select "Menu" → "Station Mgnt" → "Delete Station" on Center)
  • DON'T change the Center's Wi-Fi setting

Then,

  1. If the progress bar is moving on, wait, and upgrading will start later on the Station
  2. If the progress bar stops moving and/or the Station's display shows "Error Code xxx", turn off the Station and then turn it on.
  3. If the problem from Step 2 still exists, check there is no Wi-Fi interference around and reduce the distance between the Center, Station, and Wireless router/Access Point (if applicable)
