My PC does not recognize my player. What could be the problem?


First check that your PC configuration meets the minimum requirements by going to My Computer, right-clicking, and selecting Properties. If required, upgrade your PC to match the minimum requirements.

  • Pentium 300-MHz processor or better (1 GHz recommended)
  • Windows® XP (SP2 or above)
  • 128 MB RAM
  • 500 MB hard drive space
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 with SP2 required for use of the music store, radio, or on-demand services

Important: Windows XP Service Pack 2 is required to use this product. You can download service packs from Also make sure you have administrator privileges on the PC.

  • The USB controllers of your PC may not be installed properly.
    • Please follow the steps below to reinstall the USB controllers.
      1. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > System.
      2. Select the Hardware tab.
      3. Click to enter the Device Manager.
      4. Extend the Universal Serial Bus controllers, and select each USB port available.
      5. Double-click, and then select the Driver tab.
      6. Click the Update Driver button.
      7. Under the question, "Can Windows connect to Windows Update to search for software?" select "No, not this time," and then click Next.
      8. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)." Click Next.
      9. In the Hardware Update Wizard, select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install." Click Next.
      10. Select "Standard Universal PCI to USB Host Controller," and then click Next to complete the process.
  • Check that the version of Windows Media Player installed on your computer is the same as that on the CD-ROM. If in doubt, uninstall your existing versions of Windows Media Player and Philips Device Manager, and then install them again from the installation CD or from the support website. Please go through the steps below to install the patch:
  1. Don't connect your SA4xxx device to your PC yet.
  2. Download the "Detect Philips Device" ZIP file, located in the attachment section, to a temporary folder on your PC. Unzip the patch fix file, and then save it to the desktop.
  3. Double-click the Detect Philips Devices icon. You will be prompted to connect your player to your PC. Now, connect your SA4xxx device to the PC, and then select OK.
  4. Wait a few seconds as the tool tries to detect the Philips device you connected to the PC. If the detection is successful, then you will see a message from Windows saying that a new device has been found, and you will also be able to see the connected Philips device in Windows Explorer.

If Windows fails to recognize the SA4xxx device after running the patch

  1. Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add Hardware.
  3. Switch your player on.
  4. Make sure your player is connected to the PC, and then select Next. [DO NOT SELECT “CANCEL”] You will see a screen.
  5. Once the search is complete, you must click "If have you connected your player to the PC" or "If you have not connected your player to the PC," and then click Next.
  6. Select "Add a new hardware device."Click Next.
  7. Select "Install the Hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)," as shown in Figure 10, and then click Next.
  8. Select "Windows Portable Devices" from the Device Type list, and then click Next.
  9. Select "MTP Device" from the list. Click Next.
  10. Once installation is complete, click Finish.

If you see the callout below at in the lower-right corner of the screen when your SA4XXX device is connected to the PC. Your SA4xxx device is not properly recognized by Windows.

  1. Connect your player to the PC.
  2. You will see a list of installed hardware devices.
  3. Select USB 2.0 Device, and then click Next.
  4. Select "Install the Hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced)," and then click Next.
  5. Select "Windows Portable Devices" from the Device Type list. Click Next.
  6. Select MTP Device from the list, and then click Next.
  7. Once installation is complete, click Finish.
